Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was an American composer and pianist, best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites "Woodland Sketches", "Sea Pieces", and "New England Idyls".
Board of Directors: | About Us: MacDowell Artists Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1934 by Ruth Wilkins Tyer. Its principal mission is to hold annual auditions for high school seniors in order to grant scholarships to help further their postgraduate musical studies. MacDowell also co-sponsors the Sing-Along-Messiah held in December of each year at First United Methodist Church in Oak Park, and holds musicales in the homes of members and concerts for special occasions. Some recent MacDowell highlights include a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the Millenium Festival Orchestra and Chorus on January 1, 2000 at St. Bernardine’s Church in Forest Park, the Ruth Wilkins Tyer Memorial Piano Concert on June 6, 2004 at Concordia University’s Chapel of our Lord, and the Former Scholarship Winners Recital on October 30, 2005, also at Concordia. MacDowell’s music scholarship competition is held annually, generally in late winter or early spring. It is open to all high school seniors in the surrounding area.
